Typical activities include:

  • Exploratory research initiatives
  • Early-stage technology assessments
  • Horizon-scanning and microtech scouting
  • Pre-competitive public-private collaborations

Our Approach

MicrofabLab is not only a world-class microfabrication facility, we help bring visions to life. We play a crucial role in developing sensor platforms, organ-on-chip systems, micro fluidic diagnostic devices, and more.

Our approach is rooted in three core values: Comprehensive, Independent, and Synergistic. These principles guide how we collaborate with partners across academia, industry, and public institutions.

Strategic input and technology evaluation

Shaping ideas with expert insight

Innovation begins with framing the right questions. In this early stage, we support partners in exploring the potential of new concepts by reviewing project proposals, assessing technological feasibility, and identifying relevant fabrication approaches. This may include preparation of R&D trajectories, support for grant applications, or evaluation of potential academic and industrial collaborations. Our input is independent and focused on providing informed, vendor-neutral perspectives.

Feasibility studies and early prototyping

Turning concepts into working demonstrators

Once a concept is defined, we set up a project to translate this into tangible form. Our team works on early-stage design, process development, and proof-of-concept fabrication. In close collaboration with our engineers and scientists, technical feasibility is assessed and iteratively refined using our flexible fabrication infrastructure.

This phase focuses on:

  • Feasibility validation of novel designs
  • Rapid prototyping for research or demonstration purposes
  • Iterative testing of materials and processes
  • Joint experimentation to reduce risk in future development

Activities in this phase include:

  • Industrial research collaborations
  • Pilot-scale fabrication runs
  • Application-specific process development for biomedical and high-tech systems
  • Transitioning from lab prototype to scalable microdevice fabrication

R&D for Product Development

Building robust solutions for real-world use

In our industrial collaboration we build robust solutions for real-world use aiming to develop application-driven microdevices. This includes process optimization, integration support, and transfer-to-scale capabilities. Project ownership and intellectual property remain with the partner, while we contribute as an embedded R&D resource within the development effort.
